How Counseling For Men Can Help Make Informed Life Decisions
Making informed life decisions can be a messy and confusing process for many men. The questions of, “am I considering all of the options?” or “am I being objective about my decision making?” can become so overpowering that it leaves you paralyzed from making any decision at all. Counseling for men can be a great tool to find a neutral and accepting place to discuss goals, emotions, and options to come up with the best possible decision for your life.
What Factors Do Men Want to Consider
When making a major life decision such as a relationship, job, or move, there are a multitude of things that might interfere with the decision making process. Some of these can include:
Social pressures and exceptions
Insecurities
Financial and family obligations
Racing thoughts
What type of decisions do men often seek counseling for?
This question gets asked a lot and there is not one answer for it. In my experience as a mental health counselor the most common decisions that are brought to me are about relationships, work, and substance use. That being said, it’s important to remember that everyone is different but the process can look the same. Often times, men come into counseling not quite knowing what they are needing to change but they just know what they are doing isn’t working. Exploring our thought processes around our decision making allows us to feel comfortable that we’ve done our due diligence and confident we’ve come to a logical conclusion.
What would counseling look like for me?
Especially with a solutions-focussed approach with trying to decide a life decision, counseling can look like an open discussion with someone who will challenge and lead your thinking in an accepting setting. Having someone listen to all of the factors and then asking probing questions can often times lead people to view their situation in a different light. We sometimes get stuck in our own way of thinking, that taking a step back and viewing a situation differently can help lead a an informed decision.
