Depression Therapy
Are You Tired Of Feeling Sad Or Unmotivated All The Time?
Has depression robbed you of your sense of purpose and meaning in life? Do you feel like you are at the mercy of negative thoughts and emotions that are out of your control?
Perhaps you feel numb or even tormented because you want to get up and do things that will make you feel better, but the weight of sadness and hopelessness is just too great.
Maybe you’ve tried talking about depression only to be met with doubt or invalidation, and you’re hoping therapy will offer you some actual support and guidance.
The Symptoms Of Depression Vary Widely For Each Individual
For instance, you may have trouble sleeping well, eating right, or taking proper care of yourself. The strain of constantly battling negative thoughts about yourself and how you feel probably leaves you exhausted and unmotivated.
You may struggle to believe in your self-worth or what you are truly capable of, so you’re continuously passing up opportunities at work that could lead to advancement. In relationships, you may be cranky, irritable, or pessimistic, which creates tension and conflict. At the end of the day, you likely just wish you could feel normal and function like everyone else.
At My Time Counseling, we understand the harmful impact that depression can have on a person’s life, and we want to help you discover hope, meaning, and purpose again. With the help of our compassionate and empathetic depression therapists, you can find your path forward to healing and greater happiness in your life.
Depression Affects People On A Global Scale
In fact, it’s one of the most common mental health concerns out there, impacting approximately 280 million people worldwide.¹ And since the COVID pandemic, rates for both depression and anxiety (often co-occurring conditions) have increased 25 percent across the board.²
Although awareness around depression is growing, we still don’t talk about it much as a society because we don’t value mental well-being as much as we should. Even though most of us can agree that life isn’t always a bowl of cherries, we’re still expected to put our heads down, work, and carry on like normal, even when we’re in pain.
When we can’t, those cultural expectations exacerbate feelings of inadequacy and low self-worth, which further fuels depression. We fail to acknowledge that depression is not a person’s fault—that it could be a result of genetics, medical reasons, trauma, or a multitude of factors. That places a ton of pressure on people to heal on their own.
However, the last thing that’s going to be on your mind when you feel sad or hopeless is taking positive action to create change, which is why counseling can be so beneficial. Working with a counselor can help you sort out the causes of depression and show you concrete steps you can take toward effectively managing symptoms and reclaiming your life.
Depression Therapy Is About Giving You Time And Space To Heal On Your Own Terms
Many people who come into therapy harbor a lot of guilt and shame because they see themselves as “less than” or compromised in some way. However, our therapists at My Time Counseling want you to understand that depression is not your fault—you are not alone and what you are going through is real.
We’re also here to help you discover the roots of your depression and offer you healthy, effective ways of coping with symptoms and healing over the long term. Once you understand the source of the problem, you can consciously map out your own path toward greater happiness and internal peace.
What Can You Expect From Our Depression Treatment Sessions?
My Time Counseling offers both online and in-person depression therapy services, allowing you to reach us from wherever you feel most comfortable. We also like to get moving quickly, so after a very brief intake process, we’ll schedule your first appointment and dive straight into therapy.
That said, we realize that depression can leave a person feeling extremely vulnerable, which is why we’ll never rush you. Rather, we’re more interested in making you feel validated and safe enough to be yourself and express your thoughts and emotions no matter how heavy their burden. Instead of diagnosing, assigning homework, or rigidly adhering to strict therapeutic interventions, we are here to dwell with you amidst the chaos until we can find our way out together.
As we sit in this space together, we’ll examine the effects of depression on your life, when it began, and what you would hopefully like to achieve from therapy. We can explore aspects of your medical history, family background, upbringing, relationships, or any negative past experiences, such as trauma, that could be playing a role in things. As we work on that, we’ll equip you with powerful mindfulness-based strategies for managing symptoms and reconnecting with your body.
Some Of The Tools We May Use In Depression Treatment
To do some of the deeper work, we may use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for depression. CBT allows us to alleviate distorted thinking by replacing negative thoughts and beliefs with more optimistic, realistic views of the self.
In a similar way, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) helps clients manage and process the impact of a traumatic event that may be contributing to depression. TF-CBT is especially effective for working with younger populations.
Although we often approach therapy through a solution-focused lens, offering practical support for overcoming specific issues—ultimately, we just want to give you space and time to heal on your own terms. Our deeply empathetic and compassionate depression therapists at My Time Counseling would be honored to laugh beside you, cry with you, support you, and challenge you to realize your potential for happiness.
Though it may not be apparent now, together, we can discover the origins of your depression and find a path toward greater joy and peace of mind.
Perhaps You’re Considering Depression Therapy But You Still Have Concerns…
I feel guilty because I have nothing to feel sad about—yet I’m depressed.
Please don’t feel guilty—depression is influenced by a host of factors that are largely out of a person’s control. Plus, when you are caught up in the whirlwind of helplessness and hopelessness, it can be hard to understand where the underlying sadness is coming from, which is the first step to healing. Working with a depression counselor helps crack the code and solve the mystery so you can begin taking intentional steps toward where you want to be and how you want to feel.
Does CBT for depression—or any kind of psychotherapy—really work?
Counseling can definitely be effective—especially when using CBT and TF-CBT—two powerful, evidence-based therapy models used to treat depression, anxiety, trauma, and numerous other issues. Years of research have proven their effectiveness in helping individuals fundamentally change how they think, feel, and interact with the world.
However, the greatest therapeutic tool for anyone in pain is the organic relationship of trust that you build through therapy. Simply having someone to talk to—to bounce ideas off of and collaborate with—creates an avenue to healing that is unmatched by any single healing strategy or modality.
Is depression therapy an emotionally challenging process?
My Time Counseling takes a laid-back approach to therapy that puts you at the center of the healing process, giving you agency over our sessions. Before doing any of the deeper work, we’ll focus on making sure you feel safe, secure, and adequately equipped with coping skills for staying grounded and in control of your mind and body. From there, we’ll proceed with therapy at a pace that respects your boundaries, wishes, and goals.
